These pictures of our cornfield speak for themselves. From January 1
until August 1 we had only 4.5" of moisture. Many days were windy and
100+ degrees.
On August 10th dry lightning ignited a prairie fire in our pasture 1
mile east of our house. Before Seth & Don could even get over to the
pasture to check on the cattle, the fire had crossed into another
pasture and was burning in an unharvested wheat field. Flames
reached 30 feet in the air. The fire department just had to watch
as it jumped a gravel road and headed right toward our neighbor's place.
With the wind blowing extremely hard, the fire was just too big and too
hot to stop. With only a minute to spare, God sent the rains just
in time to save our neighbor's house. The fire burned within 30
steps of it.
The next morning we had a flare up in our pasture. Seth is manning
the fire house in the back of Darrel Hinkle's "fire truck." With the
help of our neighbors, we had the fire out before the fire department
came.
Kevin and Ronnie LaFortune patrol the perimeter of the second fire.
